Communicating with Your Webmaster
Itelephone for calling a webmasterf you're fortunate enough to have someone else taking care of the coding of your site, then communicating changes, updates and redesigns will be of the utmost importance. After all, the strength and professional appearance of your site will lay in that person's hands. I've had the opportunity of working with many people and companies as their webmasters and want to share with you what I feel makes a solid and productive working relationship.

Communicate with your webmaster as you would any member of your staff (even if they're not on your staff). Keep them appraised of upcoming changes and redesigns that you'll want made to the site — especially if they're going to have to be made quickly. Chances are, your site is not the only one he/she's overseeing.

Try to be as specific as possible when communicating redesign ideas. HTML coding and Web design can be a very time-consuming process; far more entailed than it might appear (take a look at the source coding of one of your pages in your browser's "view source" command to get an idea of what's behind producing a page). Lack of communication of what you're looking to accomplish will cost you time, money and frustration.

Organize your changes and revisions as neatly as possible. I've had some clients that just "cc" me on their mass e-mail memos and have expected me to make changes to their site (in a very timely manner) without identifying what they want me to do. Quite often, it turned out, that they didn't know what they wanted me to do with the information either. On the other end of the spectrum, I've had the pleasure of working with one client who details, in memo form, what changes need to be made and on which pages. They include laser copies of their webpages and circle the areas that need to be changed if applicable. As a result, I'm able to focus their site changes. One client wasted a lot of time and money. The other saves a lot of time and money and frequently hears my praises and thanks.

Discuss the goals of your site with your webmaster. Ask for his/her ideas about using new technology and plug-ins to accomplish those goals. They work with the available technology on a regular basis and may have some good ideas for you. Refer them to another site if you see something that might work well with your site.

Most webmasters are notorious for having atrocious grammar and spelling. Discuss any concerns you have about these issues and what sort of timeliness you'll require for your update and changes to be made before the relationship gets strained.slug
