Double-checking
Your Website
 or
some reason, what a designer sees on his/her screen is entirely different
from what comes up on your system once web content is uploaded to the
server. I'm not sure why. In some cases, your server reads things differently
than your local system but, mostly, errors and problems just aren't as
apparent until you've put them up for the whole world to see kind
of why you notice your fly is unzipped in public rather than when you're
in the privacy of your own home. Murphy's law? Here's a list of things
a webmaster or site manager might double-check.
- Check and double-check that you've spelled everything
correctly and that the grammar makes sense.
- Double-check that any strange characters were not translated
into HTML. A common problem that I had was
that apostrophes don't transfer correctly from Word documents to HTML.
A character that should look like this: ' comes out looking like this:
Ô
- Be sure that all of the changes have been made.
- Make sure that your pages don't take too long to download.
If they take more time than 30 seconds on a 28kps modem then you should
consider breaking the page into multiple pages or downsizing/eliminating
some graphics.
- There's enough whitespace around graphics and bulletpoints
to be able to read text easily.
- All of the graphics are loading properly and they are
being found by a browser.
