Putting All the Pieces of Web Design Together
It seems like only yesterday that I designed my first website and submitted it to Yahoo. The site was added to Yahoo's listings that same day and I even received a personal e-mail confirming it. How times have changed. The web has become so vast that it can now take months for a Yahoo listing to appear, if at all. The basics of web pages, however, have not changed all that much.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) coding is still what a web browser reads to display a web page. Through the use of essential, link, alignment, list, table, rule and image tags, most anyone can create a web page. Many HTML and text editors, like Dreamweaver and B.B. Edit, exist to help the beginner or seasoned pro do this with relative ease.

Text is all well and good but what would the Web be without pictures and graphics? The most common formats are GIFs and JPEGs. Both have their strengths and appropriate uses. GIFs use limited color palates (called index color) while JPEGs offer a greater amount of bit depth. Your choice will depend on what your image looks like. Whichever format you choose, it's important to be aware of the appropriate amount of pixels (or resolution) that your images should have.

Before you can create an effective website, it's important to understand the terms and language of the Internet. Most people are familiar with bookmarks or favorites, search engines, frames and bandwidth while fewer are familiar with details about encryption, chat and newsgroups.

When developing a site, there a many areas to consider. Areas like audience focus, content, organization, page size and various common site mistakes are all things that should be considered. Though creating a site may be relatively easy, creating an effective a site is a lot harder.

Once you have your site on the Web, the work doesn't stop there. Many people consider that only half the job. Today, people expect that webpages will be updated on a daily, hourly and even minute-by-minute basis. It's important to keep the site current, double-check updates, track marketing efforts and to consider ways to grow your site (such as using CGI, PDFs or audio — like MP3 files). Needless to say, communication with your webmaster (if you have one) is of great importance.slug
