Where
you are: MP3
Files: Small Size, Great Quality MP3 files are sound files that are based on the earlier technology known as MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group). MPEG was originally developed by the entertainment industry for audio and video distribution. The goal was to find an effective way to distribute broadcast-quality signals on media like CD-ROMs or over networks. MPEG files uses a form of "lossy" file compression. With lossy compression, information is lost during the compression process and can not be regained. As with JPEG image compression, one reduces file size by sacrificing bits of information that, if done correctly, will be noticeable. The MPEG compression was based on a detailed analysis of the way our ears hear sound. The creators of the compression worked to figure out what parts of a sound our ears hear and what parts are not heard at all. By doing this, engineers discovered what parts of sound could be eliminated without being noticeable to the human ear. There are several layers of sound in MPEG files and each is distinguished by the algorithm used to compress the file (stay with me, we're getting to MP3). There's MPEG 1 (1st layer), MPEG 2 (2nd layer) and MPEG 3 (3rd layer) or MP3. The higher the layer, the more horsepower is needed to convert it and the better the compression ratio. Because of this, MP3 files have great audio quality as well as incredible compression. A 36mb file can be compressed down to only 3mb and will still have sound quality similar to a compact disc's. These small MP3 sound files are easy to download and can be transferred
to portable players. These players are battery-powered and can be used
like a portable CD or cassette player. With all of this versatility and
easy transportability, it's no wonder that the music publishers are very
concerned about pirating opportunities. Tip: Affordable Graphic Design classes are available near you? Sign up for FREE information from top design schools. Some Links You May Find Useful
