CGI: Keeping to the Script
I man holding paperf you've ever stood around talking to some real "webheads," you've probably heard them talk about CGI scripts. What are they and how does they fit into the grand scheme of a website? Well, if you're like most, you probably won't be dealing with them directly but it can be helpful to know what the heck they are.

CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface which is basically a method for running programs or scripts on a Web server. CGI scripts allow viewers to interact with web pages and a server. The program is triggered by input coming from the browser and usually accesses some sort of database to serve up a customized response, depending on the data being fed to it. The actions do not have to be performed by one script but can be done by multiple scripts. Each script performs part of the overall action to create the final result. These scripts can do things like search a database, leave comments on a site or enable folks to chat online.

CGI scripts are usually accessed in one of two ways; directly or as the Action method to a form. Both of these kinds of scripts have similar behaviors but do very different things. If you've ever used a fill-in form or search engine on the Web then you've utilized a CGI script of one kind or another. slug
