Finding Your Website's Audience
Iman reading from bindert's very helpful and important to figure out who a site's audience is. This may seem like marketing 101 but you'd be surprised at how many companies forget to define their audience. Copy is important as is design but equally important, if not more so, is defining a site's audience before it's created.

If your audience is in the corporate world, then chances are, they have very fast connections and up-to-date hardware and software. They are either very knowledgeable about technology or they have an Information Systems department that supports them. They can typically handle big pages with large graphic files and that utilize the latest plug-ins.

If your audience is general consumers or small-businesses, then your site should be developed with them in mind. Chances are that they don't have fast connections and are not likely to have the latest and fastest computers. They may also not have the latest browsers or plug-ins as downloading large files, like browsers, may be a very laborious ordeal. They also may not have much computer knowledge. Services like America Online are very popular because of the ease and simplicity of their interfaces.

If you're not sure who your audience is going to be or, more likely, if you're trying to appeal to parts of both audiences, you can take this information into consideration as well. One answer could be to give visitors a choice on your home page as to which of two paths they would like to take; one that requires a fast connection and certain software and one that does not. This entails creating two sets of pages which are more expensive to produce and update.

Then track, through server reports, what percentage of visitors are going down each path. You may be surprised to learn what most of your audience prefers. This information will help you further develop your site for your audience's needs.slug
