Web File Formats
Web design has changed a lot since I built my first site back in 1996. You can make your site interactive, personalize it for the specific visitor and so much more. Still, the basics haven't changed and it never hurts to know about the basics. That's what this section is all about. Want the whole story? Try reading our web design overview!

Acrobat Acrobat & PDF Files: Useful When You Need 'Em!
monitor with umbrella pictureThough PDF files are not actually graphic image files, many frequently group them together because they are a means of displaying images on the Web or on other computers. PDFs are a pretty unique animal. These files are created by the Acrobat program and come with a world of possibilities. Acrobat was developed...read more

GIF Images: Web Files and More
GIF (Graphical Interchange Format) files are graphic images that can be displayed on any computer. The online-service provider CompuServe first developed this format for the purpose of transferring graphics via phone lines to their subscribers. (CompuServe, for those who don't know, is a proprietary online-service in the same vein as America Online who bought the company in 1998.) Because GIFs files are...read more

JPEG Images: Versatile & Spacesavers
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) images, like GIFs, are graphic image files that Web browsers like Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer can read and display. But, while GIFs are limited to use on-screen because of their 8-bit, 256-color maximum, index color mode, JPEGs can be used for a whole lot more. JPEGs are bitmap images and can be edited/created...read more

GIF and JPEG Images on the Web
There are two basic image file formats that a designer can use on webpages. They are the GIF (Graphical Interchange Format) and the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) image formats. GIF files use the index color mode which means that the files can have a maximum of 256 colors in them. The key is that I said a maximum number of colors. Through image editing software like Photoshop and Fireworks, a designer can rework colors so that an image looks the same but uses fewer colors...read more

MP3 Audio Files: Small Size, Great Quality
To say that MP3 files have become the latest Web craze would be an understatement. I recently read that MP3 has now surpassed sex as the most often searched word on the Internet. That says a lot considering how popular sex is on the ‘net. So, what is MP3 and what does it mean to me? MP3 files are sound files that are based on the earlier technology known as MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group). MPEG was originally developed by the entertainment industry...read more

Introduction to HTML
It seems like only yesterday that I designed my first website and submitted it to Yahoo. The site was added to Yahoo's listings that same day and I even received a personal e-mail confirming it. How times have changed. The web has become so vast that it can now take months for a Yahoo listing to appear, if at all. The basics of web pages, however, have not changed all that much. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) coding is still what a web browser reads to display a web page. Through the use of essential, link, alignment, list, table, rule and image tags, most anyone can...read more
