Slab Serif Typefaces
Slab serif typefaces, also known as "square serif" fonts, are characterized by thick parts of the letter forms. This came about because people liked the Modern fonts but realized that they couldn't be printed in small sizes. To get around this, fontographers created a whole new style of typeface that was uniformly thick all around.

These typefaces have serifs but they are usually quite thick and often flat. They're perfect for designs when the quality of printing isn't the most refined.

Examples of slab serif fonts are Cheltenham, Courier and Rockwell and are available as PostScript fonts from Adobe.slug
