So What Are Fonts Anyway?
TA to Z in block lettershe word font was, at one time, used to indicate a certain size of a certain typeface. Producing new fonts was no easy task. Back in the early days of printing, A font had to be crafted by hand in a very time-consuming and precise manner. It sometimes took years before a family of fonts were ready to be used.

Today, fonts are mostly thought of as computer files. These files contain the digital information necessary to reproduce the intricacies of a certain typeface on your local printer, on a professional imagesetter and on your computer screen. An awful lot of information is contained in those little files to do that. These computer fonts come in two kinds; PostScript and TrueType.

Fonts consist of up to 256 individual characters which include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and a variety of symbols. I say "up to" because that's the maximum. There are some typefaces which don't have lowercase letters or few extra characters, for example.

A font consists of one set of a typeface's characters. Futura Regular is one font and Futura Bold is another as is Futura Oblique and so on. They are all different fonts or typefaces but are part of the same font family.slug
