Sans Serif Typefaces
Sans serif typefaces have been around for a long time and actually started in the early 1800s when William Caslon created a typeface by stripping off the slab serifs (which he deplored). He was apparently alone because sans serif fonts didn't catch on for over 100 years.

This style of typeface confuses people because of it's name. Usually an extra word is given to indicate that there is something additional. You have a hamburger and you have a cheeseburger, which is a hamburger with cheese added to it. Fonts are the opposite. A serif is the little added bit that sticks out of serif fonts. A sans serif font is one that doesn't have serifs (sans is French and means "without").

Examples of sans serif fonts are Arial, Futura, Folio, Helvetica and Univers.slug
