odern
typefaces are characterized by the thick and thin strokes that form the
letters. The handwritten charm of the oldstyle typeface was replaced by
the harsh, and sometimes severe, appearence of the Modern typefaces. Serifs,
in particular, are very sharp and the bottom parts of the letters are
created at right angles from the main part of the letters.
Unfortunaetly,
this style of typeface does not really lend itself to be used for passages
of text. The thick and thin parts of the characters are very stark and
are not the easiest to read or reproduce at smaller sizes. Designers use
these fonts for headlines and phrases where there are fewer words that
can be used in larger sizes.
