Moving Along with Storage & Transport Media Options
S CD-ROMtorage and transport media are a very important and useful part of a designer's stable of equipment. Storage media refers to an internal or external hard drive that is used to store computer files. It is usually stationary because of the cords and connections used to attach the drive to the main system.

Transport media refers to the way you can transport or store files. Typically, transport media comes with two components, a drive that you attach to your main system and a disk or cartridge that is used to store or transport the actual computer files. Permanent transport media like CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs offer a safe choice for storage as they are permanent. Erasable media can fail or corrupt over time. A few options for transport media include:

  • DVDs
  • Syquest Cartridges
  • Dat Tapes

If you need additional hard drive space or a form of transport media, there's a few things you should consider:

  • Will you need to transport large graphic files from one place to another, for example from your system to a printer? If so, then transport media is the right choice.
  • Are your storage needs likely to increase? If so, a form of media that allows for growth like transport media is the way to go. Transport media drives are initially expensive but the cartridges/disks are more cost-effective in the long run.
  • Will you want constant access to a lot of files? If this is a necessity, consider an additional hard drive that can remain connected to your main system at all times.
  • If you're looking to primarily back-up and store large amounts of data, consider permanent forms of storage like CD-ROMs. Hard drives can fail over time, erasable media can corrupt over time but CD-ROMs are permanent.
