Fireworks: Something to Celebrate
n the age of such industry-standard programs as Photoshop, Quark and Illustrator, it's hard to impress a graphic designer with a new product. Our needs are usually well-covered. But, a few years ago, Macromedia started producing a program that has greatly increased my productivity and efficiency in creating web graphics. There's no easier way to win a designer's heart than by saving him time and to make his life easier.

Fireworks, published by the same folks who publish the high-tech wizardry of Director and Flash, is a vector and bitmap image creation/modification program. The program is set up to do one thing: create or modify artwork for Intranet and Internet sites. Fireworks does this extremely well. Before Fireworks, I had to depend on a handful of professional and shareware programs to do the same jobs. Fireworks offers you the ability to:

• Reuse graphics and settings from within a library feature.

• Automate the processing of multiple images.

• Utilize a number of special effects filters, including those from programs like Photoshop.

• Create animated GIFs.

• View multiple preview export windows to choose the best setting for an image in terms of color, clarity and file size.

• Create image maps for producing interesting navigation images.

• Export HTML coding which can be pasted into an HTML editing program.

Fireworks is so useful because it is geared to producing graphics in the best quality with the smallest file size possible. Other graphic image programs will do this but the job takes more time.

Fireworks is published by Macromedia, is available for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems and retails for approximately $180. The Macromedia website offers tips and tricks and can be found at www.macromedia.com.
