Jaz Cartridges: Storing Lots and Lots of Files
I boxes of filesomega, realizing that they'd hit upon a good thing with the Zip disks and drives, took advantage of their success and created bigger versions. They called them Jaz cartridges and drives. Things haven't been the same since.

Though Jaz drives haven't caught on with the general public like the Zips have, most every graphic designer you can find will own one. Jaz drives and disks offer the following benefits:

  • Jaz cartridges come in two sizes: one gigabyte and two gigabytes.
  • The disks can be used to transport and store files of immense file size. It's not uncommon for a graphic file, which might contain several Photoshop layers and channels, to exceed the capacity of a Zip disk.
  • The cartridges can be used to back up entire hard drives and are perfect for moving copies of graphic files from a full hard drive.
  • The disks and the drives are affordable and are a real value compared to the price of an external hard drive of a similar size.

Jaz drives and disks are available for both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. Single gigabyte Jaz cartridges are available for approximately $100 each and cost even less in larger quantities. Two gigabyte cartridges cost about $20 more and are the same physical size as the single gigabyte cartridges. A two gigabyte Jaz drive costs approximately $350 and can read and write to both sized cartridges. (One gigabyte drives are no longer being made).
