Image-editing Programs: Changing the World
I globe remember the first time that I saw what an image-editing program could do. There was an article in one of the graphics magazines that highlighted a photo taken of the two leads of Miami Vice (dating myself here). The objective of the article was to show the painstaking method of adding a firearm and holster to Don Johnson's side. I was amazed that one could actually add an image from another photo with such skill that it all looked very natural. Today, this seems like child's play and, to an extent, it is.

An image-editing program, like Photoshop and Fireworks, works with bitmap images like photographs, pastel drawings or any artwork that contains soft edges. A designer can use one of these programs to change an image's tone, hue, saturation, brightness and contrast. They can be used to merge photographs together to create realistic images or wild images from the imagination.

Image-editing programs come with a myriad of filters which can enable you to change an image in interesting ways. For example, you can make a new photo look very old or make a very old photo look brand new. You can add drop shadows, backgrounds or textures with a few skilled clicks of the mouse. The possibilities are seemingly endless and, if that weren't enough, there are hundreds of companies that offer a variety of different and interesting filters. Image-editing programs also allow you to change an image's color mode from say, RGB to CMYK or Grayscale or to change an image's file format from, for example, a TIFF to an EPS file.slug
