Floppy Disks Aren't So Floppy Anymore
S o, why is it that floppy disks aren't very, well, floppy? Actually they used to be "floppy" back in the old days (the 1980s). Back then, floppy disks were quite a bit larger than they are today. They measured 5.25" square and were made of a flexible plastic material (like the ones to the right). They could easily bend if you held them horizontally by the corner. Heck, you could actually bend them so that two corners could touch but I wouldn't lay any bets on the safety of the disk's data if you did.

Today, floppy disks are much smaller and compact. The data contained on a disk's little magnetic circle is protected by a hard plastic covering. If you're new to this whole computer game, here's a few more things you might like to know about floppy disks.

  • They can be formatted to work on either Macintosh or Windows-based systems.
  • They can be locked to prevent accidental erasure by opening the tiny window tab on the top.
  • Disks come in two sizes: high-density which will hold 1,400 kilobytes (1.2mb) of data and low-density which will hold only 800 kilobytes of data. The low-density disks are somewhat rare today as floppy disks are generally so inexpensive.
  • Placing a magnet on or near a floppy disk can erase or damage the disk's data.
  • Newer Macintosh systems, from 1999 on, no longer have floppy drives preinstalled in them. It is possible to purchase a separate drive to be able to use floppy disks.
  • Another style of disk called the Super Disk has recently come on the market. The Super Disks will hold 120mb of data and can be read by Super Drives. These Super Drives can read floppies as well as Super Disks.

It would seem, at least on the Macintosh side, that the days of using floppy disks is numbered. I have a closet full of them (as most every designer does) and never use them. Though pages of written data or a small Website will fit on a floppy, most graphic files won't. I wonder if I could tile my bathroom with them...?slug
