Acrobat: Lots of Versatility in One Package Acrobat was developed several years ago by Adobe, the company behind Photoshop, Pagemaker, Illustrator and many other programs. Acrobat is available in two versions: Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Distiller. The Acrobat Reader is a free piece of software that is available for Macintosh, Windows and other operating systems. If you have an Internet connection, you can download the software from Adobe's website for free. Once installed, the Reader will allow you to view Acrobat documents on your own system. You will also be able to attach notes or "stickies" to document file pages which can be very helpful in communicating issues and changes to a designer or client. The second version of Acrobat is the Acrobat Distiller. This is not free and one needs this software to actually create Acrobat documents. The great advantage to this software is that one can, using Adobe's PostScript technology, easily create Acrobat documents from any other program's documents. If you can print a document, you can make it into an Acrobat file. Acrobat documents can be read by anyone who has the Acrobat Reader software installed on their system. Regardless of operating system or fonts, you can see the same image on-screen. It's very helpful to show clients what a layout will look like. What's more, you can print an Acrobat document, in color, with a great deal of consistency to the original document. As one person put it, it's like having a color fax machine in your computer. Acrobat is an incredibly useful tool. As I mentioned, the Adobe Reader
software is free and can be freely downloaded and distributed. The Adobe
Distiller program costs about $200 and is required to be able to create
Acrobat files. The programs are produced by Adobe Systems, Inc. and their
website can be found at www.adobe.com. |
